Rush U.S. News & World Report 2009 ranks Rush Medical Center’s programs among the Best in the U.S.

 


U.S.News & World Report has once again ranked Rush University Medical Center among the top hospitals in the country in its annual “America’s Best Hospitals” issue due out in August. Rush is ranked among the top 50 programs in the country in 9 of 16 categories It is notable that only a very small number of hospitals nationwide were ranked in 9 or more categories. Just 174 out of 4,861 hospitals (3%)in the United States scored high enough this year to rank in even a single specialty category.

The programs at Rush that were included in the rankings are noted below. The hospital ranked higher than any other hospital in Illinois in orthopedics (#12 in the nation). Its Heart and heart surgery, neurology and neurosurgery, and digestive disorders programs made significant improvements in their rankings as well. Gynecology and ear, nose and throat programs, also made the rankings.

The magazine added a new variable this year, patient safety to help determine the rankings. The other variables were reputation, mortality index, breadth of services and technology, and various quality-related measures, such as patient volumes and nursing care.
