Patent Awarded and New Patient Safety Technology to be introduced.

United States Patent and Trademark Office (PTO) awarded the patent “System and methods for identification of implanted medical devices and/or detection of retained surgical foreign objects from medical images” - WO 2013082289 A1 to Vicko Gluncic, MD, PhD and Rush University Medical Center in April 2016. The patent is based on research within Rush's Department of Anesthesiology in 2011-2013 conducted by Vicko Gluncic and Mario Moric, which has resulted in multiple publications. In July 2016, Rush University Medical Center Technology Transfer Office licensed out this patent to RaPID Medical Technology – a company providing computer assisted detection (CADe) of retained surgical items and implanted medical devices in radiological images. These CADe solutions will be integrated in picture archiving and communication system (PACS).

The Department of Anesthesiology extends its congratulations to Mario Moric and Vicko Gluncic for moving this innovative patient safety technology toward clinical implementation.
